Discovering Argentinean Music
Luis Gianneo’s “Music for Children

The Argentinean composer Luis Gianneo was able to express all the facets of Argentinean music in this  collection of piano pieces for the intermediate student. This lecture-recital and demonstration will explore the variety of musical elements together with the richness of pedagogical possibilities  found in these pieces.

Piano with Spanish Flavor:
Teaching expression through
intermediate Spanish repertoire

The flavor of Spanish music is a captivating one. The rhythms and melodies of Spanish music, most of which have received the Moorish influence, present a kaleidoscopic variety of challenges for the young pianist. Shaping, phrasing, keyboard choreography and emotional connection to the music are only some of the concepts that this music poses for teaching purposes

About the Clinician

Fernanda Nieto was born in Mendoza, Argentina, where she received her undergraduate degree summa cum laude in piano performance. She was recognized by the Argentinean Federation of College Women for her outstanding academic work. She completed her Masters Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Ohio University under the direction of Gail Berenson and Alejandro Cremaschi. In 2005 the National Federation of Music Clubs awarded her the Lynn Freeman Olson Pedagogy Award, making her the first international student to receive the award. In 2009 she completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder, under the direction of David Korevaar. Dr. Nieto has presented at the Colorado Music Educators Association, the American Musicological Society Rocky Mountain Chapter, the Music Teachers National Association Conference and the Colorado State Music Teachers Association Conference. In 2009, the College Music Society awarded her the Yamaha In-Residence Fellowship. During this one year fellowship she developed an engagement program with local schools to promote Argentinean music.  Currently, Dr. Nieto holds a position as an affiliate piano faculty member at the Metropolitan State College of Denver, where she teaches applied piano, piano pedagogy and class piano. She also teaches piano to children and adults of all ages at the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts in Colorado and in her own studio.

Music, The Brain, and the iGeneration:
Teaching the Acoustic in a Digital Age

 


Technology is changing the way our students live, learn, and connect but what impact should this have on music education? Should we change our methods of teaching to fit the digital revolution? Research has shown that traditional music education has a profound impact on brain development but research is also showing that technology is also changing how our brains are wired. Explore how the brain learns, neural reactions to stress and motivation, benefits of traditional music education, and how we can marry the traditional and technology to create motivated, engaged, and energized students.

 

About the Clinician

Dr. Andrea McAlister is Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she coordinates the piano pedagogy and secondary piano programs. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music. Active as clinician, Dr. McAlister has presented on topics such as motivation, learning, and brain development, specifically in the adolescent student, and how technology is influencing the development of our students. She has recently presented at the Music Teachers National Association Conference, the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, World Piano Pedagogy Conference, and the International Conference on Sociology in Music Education and has been published in The American Music Teacher, Keyboard Companion, and the MTNA e-journal. Dr. McAlister is an active member of the Music Teachers National Association and serves as the Vice-President of Membership for the Ohio Music Teachers Association.
